CBSE Introduces new attendance rules for Class 10th and 12th students to check poor performance in examinations

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced new attendance guidelines for Class 10th and 12th students to check their poor performance in the examinations. CBSE has released new rules to deal with the high number of cases relating to short attendance in the schools affiliated to it. It has also specified the attendance requirements for the students eligible to appear for Class 10th and 12th examinations. The Board’s bye-laws state the attendance percentage upto which it can be considered for condonation and the grounds for its consideration.

As per the analysis conducted by the cbse for the 2019 result, it was concluded that students with low attendance performed poorly in the examinations that made the board take strict actions against the same. Some of the observations made by the board during this analysis are as follows –

  • The Board noticed that some of the students and the parents were not submitting desired documents to the schools and certificates of competent authorities while seeking exemption from school.
  • Also, the schools were not adhering to the schedule for submissions of the required documents and certificates and nor were they sending cases of short attendance to the CBSE. CBSE observed that the students are not attending school on a regular basis.

CBSE has prepared some Standard Operating Procedures for dealing with students who have less attendance that what has been prescribed for the information and compliance by Schools, students and parents. The board has also asked the schools to communicate the information and rule position to students and parents.

Actions Schools will be taking on short attendance as per new CBSE Rules

  • Inform the students and their parents about the importance of attendance and classes
  • Sensitize the students and parents to relevant rules regarding the attendance requirements during the academic session
  • Also, inform the parents and students on what grounds can the short attendance be condoned
  • Ask the students and parents to submit a medical certificate from competent authority supporting the reason for availing leaves as and when the leave is availed.
  • Warn both the students and their parents in the case, the students are not attending classes regularly. Also, schools are required to maintain a record of students with short attendance.
  • Schools are to recommend the cases as per the  Examination bye-laws only
  • Attendance will be calculated as on 1st January of the academic session
  • Shortage of attendance cases received in the concerned Regional Office up to 7th January of the academic session of Class X or XII will only be considered by the Board.
  • No case will be accepted after 7th January of the academic session of Class X or XII
  • Cases without Mandatory documents will be summarily rejected.
