To study abroad for free, you don’t need to be rocket scientist! After all, there are so many different scholarships from states to universities to commercial and non-profit organizations and foundations. You can count on material support in a difficult financial situation, social scholarship, or financing for special achievements. We compiled a list of countries where you can more easily secure a scholarship so you have a better chance of studying abroad.
Germany
A particularly popular country for admission among students from all over the world. No wonder: In Germany almost all universities are free of charge and the country’s largest scholarship fund — DAAD — provides a scholarship to cover living expenses. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people wish to win a scholarship here.
What is the Catch?
- the DAAD scholarship applies only to Master’s degree applicants
- For admission into a bachelor’s degree program in Germany, you need to either complete at least 1 year of bachelors level courses at a university in your homeland or catch up at the German Studienkolleg college. Only 2nd or 3d year bachelor students can apply for a scholarship. To enroll in a master’s degree program, it is necessary to have a bachelor’s degree.

France
Most educational programs in France are free, which means that you will need to gather your documents, write motivation and recommendation letters for the program itself and when applying for a state scholarship to cover living expenses.
In cases where you need to pay an educational program, additional scholarships can be obtained from universities and non-government scholarship funds. Moreover, every foreign student has the right to receive a monthly partial compensation for the cost of renting an apartment.
What is the catch?
A scholarship from the French government cannot be combined together with other scholarships. If a student wins several scholarships, he or she will have to choose only one. The amount of the scholarship you’ll receive from the government of France is fixed at 700 euros. The scholarship to study is given out for 9 months, the social scholarship is given for 10 months and the transfer takes place on a monthly basis. Italy
In Italy, in addition to the relatively low tuition fees (an average of €1-2 thousand per year), many students from all over the world are attracted to the opportunity to win a scholarship to cover financial hardship. The cost of accommodation is also quite low. An applicant, together with a standard application package, also provides information about the annual income of his or her family.

Czech Republic
Education in the Czech Republic is completely free… in Czech! This country is friendly to foreign students and provides the opportunity to take Czech language courses one year before entering university. Foreigners can receive scholarships for the year they’ll study the Czech language. Scholarship selection criteria are much easier to meet than university admission. Poland
Polish universities provide scholarships and tuition grants for foreign students from CIS countries. To apply for a scholarship you need to provide:
- a school education certificate
- a language certificate confirming the level of proficiency in the Polish language
- a motivation letter
Tuition will be free and you can apply for a scholarship both before you begin to study and while taking classes. While studying, a student has the right to apply for a social scholarship (for students in a difficult financial situation — 600 zloty/month), an academic scholarship (for especially gifted students according to the results of the first year of study — from 350 to 800 zloty/month), sports scholarship (300-550 zloty/month), scholarship from an employer (900 zloty/month and in addition — a job after graduation).
Hungary
The Hungarian Government Scholarship covers not only academic degrees (bachelor, master’s, postgraduate) but also preparatory and specialized courses.
In addition, the student has accommodation paid for and a monthly allowance of 130-580 euros (depending on the chosen program). There is a pleasant bonus for citizens of Russia and Belarus — with a scholarship you can study either full-time and part-time. China
The most famous grant of China is provided by the government of China and fully covers not only study, but also accommodation. It’s called The Grant of the PRC and includes a monthly scholarship of $500-600 is paid to the student.
BUT, it only provides funding to those who wish to receive a master’s and doctorate degree and the candidate must not be older than 35-40 years, have a bachelor’s degree, and honour the traditions of the country.
Another opportunity to get a grant is provided by the Confucius Institute, but only in the “Chinese language” specialty. The scholarship is very generous: tuition and accommodation are fully covered, as well as a monthly allowance of $317 to $571 USD per month (exact amount depends on what scientific degree you are getting).
In addition, there are grants from universities and cities that provide free accommodation and cover up to 75% of tuition.
But, unfortunately, right after graduation you will not be able to get a job in China, because of new Chinese laws that only grants work visas to people that have two years of work experience. So you will have to either get 2 years of work experience before you enter the university (for example, work a little between your bachelor’s and master’s degree) or return to your country for 2 years after graduation.
