Career over turban

Angad Bedi had to sacrifice his turban for a career in Bollywood. “When I came to Mumbai, there was no acceptance for a turbaned hero,” says former cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi’s son.

“But now, actors such as Diljit Dosanjh are making it here and people have accepted him. Indian cinema is changing for the better,” he says.

His parents have been supportive of his career choices. The 34-year-old hunk says: “My dad saw Pink and loved it. He is happy I have chosen films such as Tiger Zinda Hai and Soorma. He is glad about my choices of films and that I am doing meaningful cinema.”

This year, Angad was also part of the web series Inside Edge, which is based on cricket.

“It’s been a fantastic experience. Since I understand the game, I was more comfortable doing the series. I would often discuss the nuances of the game with my father. I think my role as Arun Vashisht could be put in his shoes. It was my father’s belief that made me take up the show,” he says.

Apart from that the actor is now training in hockey for his forthcoming film Soorma starring Diljit Dosanjh. “It’s tough and I had to unlearn a lot of things since it is so very different from cricket. I am still learning.”

The actor says he would one day love to do a film on his father Bishan Singh Bedi.
