Sathyabama University closed till Jan. 2; semester exams postponed

The body of Duvvru Raga Monica, 19, a student of Sathyabama University, who committed suicide on Wednesday, was handed over to her parents after post-mortem on Thursday. A case under Cr P C Section 174 has been registered at Semmancheri Police Station.

The girl, hailing from Hyderabad, committed suicide in her hostel room after being admonished by the invigilator for indulging in malpractice during the semester exam.

Police officials said the family took her body to their hometown. A senior official said the parents had not preferred a complaint against the institution. The incident happened in the morning and the students in the hostel went on a rampage in the evening, burning furniture and college property.

On Thursday morning, students left the university premises as the institution had declared holiday till January 2. The varsity administration took the decision on Wednesday night and sent messages to parents about the closure.

The university has filed a case against the students at the Semmanchery Police Station for damaging college property. A police official said: “Only after investigation would we be able to know the identities and number of students involved in the incident.”

An official of the university also said at least three exams had been postponed as the end-semester leave had been declared a week ahead of the schedule. “All the exams due for one week have been postponed to January.”
