The Ohio State University Max M. Fisher College of Business understands that one size does not always fit all when it comes to MBA programs.
Most business schools’ brochures brim with statistics on the diversity of their students. Now, b-schools are crafting MBA courses with enough flexibility to allow those diverse groups to tailor their learning based on their individual career needs.
Fisher, in particular, offers numerous options for MBA students to choose from, running the gamut from MBA electives in Data Analytics and Tech Entrepreneurship, to Sports Management and Leadership and Organizational Behavior.
The college also gives MBA students the chance to design their own major with help from a supervisor.
Sankha Ghosh, a current MBA student at Fisher, used his MBA experience to launch a consulting career with McKinsey. He’ll start his new associate job at the firm after graduating this year.
BusinessBecause caught up with Sankha to find out more.
How did you customize your MBA at Fisher to suit your career goals?
I came into the MBA program with a unique background. A PhD in molecular biology with minimal real-life business experience allowed me to start with a blank slate. I decided to broaden my skillset so that I could be successful in any industry or in any business-related job function.
I chose electives that would teach me various facets of a business environment, from analyzing big data to improving operations; from promoting a product to valuing a company.
The strategy to become a generalist served me immensely, helping me secure a job at McKinsey as an associate, which, at least initially, is not tied to any particular function or industry.
What stands out from your MBA experience at Fisher?
Unlike most other top MBA programs, Fisher has a class size of approximately 100 students. The small size allows students to build a strong relationship with each other. It also allows the faculty to create a personalized and supportive learning environment.
Throughout my MBA, I have cherished the bonds I have developed with my professors and my peers. I take pride and comfort in the fact that I have made some lifelong friends here at Fisher.
Why did you decide to pursue an MBA at Fisher College of Business?
I completed my PhD at The Ohio State University. I also worked here as a research associate afterward.
I was keenly aware of the quality of education a student receives here, as well as the intellectually stimulating environment that this vibrant and diverse campus provides. Personally, I have grown so fond of Columbus that it feels like home.
Naturally, when it was time to select a business school, Fisher was an obvious choice — I could receive a world-class education without having to leave home.
What advice do you have for anyone considering an MBA?
Know yourself. It will help you throughout this challenging yet satisfying MBA experience. If you accurately identify your skillsets and know your goals, it will be that much easier for you to show why you are a good fit. Once the program starts, it will also enable you to connect with your peers at a more granular level.
As the MBA progresses, you will rediscover yourself. Fisher College of Business will empower you to show proficiency in skills you did not even know you had. During this critical juncture, familiarity with your roots will enable you to find the suitable direction for you to grow and evolve.
