- Haryana CM Manohar Lal has formally launched the Ujala (LED bulbs) scheme of Haryana Power
DISCOMs. Haryana Government is planning to distribute LED bulbs at highly discounted prices to nearly 44 lakh domestic consumers. - The Jammu and Kashmir government will provide a number of medicines free of charge, under its new drug policy.
- The Parliament has passed the Carriage by Air (Amendment) Bill. It promises to give increased compensation to air travellers in case of death, injury, delay in flights and loss of baggage. Once the bill is approved by the President, Indian carriers will have to pay compensation amounts equivalent to the rates paid by their global counterparts.
- Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced that the government is planning to install computerised services at all the fair price shops by March 2019 by installing electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) devices.
- The government has appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan as Chairman of the 21st Law Commission.
- Railway Ministry has launched Clean My Coach Service to ensure cleanliness in trains. This service allows travellers to get their compartments cleaned by sending an SMS or by using an app or a designated website. As per the scheme, for any cleaning requirement in the coach, the passengers will have to send an SMS on mobile number 58888. Passenger can also use android app-‘Cleanmycoach Indian Railways’ or webpage ‘cleanmycoach.com’ for logging the request.
- The first ever pollution-free, fully electricity-operated bus has been launched in New Delhi.
- The Lok Sabha has passed the Aadhaar Bill 2016 as a ‘money bill‘ to give legal sanction to the unique identification number programme for single-window transfer of welfare benefits.
- The second tranche of 25 secret files on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will be released after the conclusion of Budget session of the Parliament, announced Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma. National Archives of India Deputy Director Sanjay Garg has said that the organisation is converting the second set of files into digital form for the public.
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched its 6th navigation satellite into the Earth’s orbit from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The 1,425-kilogram IRNSS-1F satellite is a part of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) that aims at providing accurate indigenous navigation at par with the US-based Global Positioning System (GPS).
- Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar, a stealth frigate of the Indian Navy entered Port Louis, Mauritius and shall remain there till 13 March 2016. The primary aim of the visit is to participate in the Mauritius National Day celebrations and to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship between the two nations.
- The Union Cabinet has approved Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana, a Rs 8,000-crore scheme to provide cooking gas (LPG) connections free of cost to women members of poor households. The Cabinet approved this scheme with an outlay of Rs 8,000 crore for three years. The scheme will benefit 5 crore BPL households.
- The Rajya Sabha has passed the National Waterways Bill 2015 unopposed. This move paves the way for the conversion of 106 additional inland waterways into transport waterways, taking their total number to 111. Once made into a law, the waterways can be used to transport cargo, which is the most cost-efficient and fuel-efficient means of transport according to the shipping ministry.
- The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, aimed at bringing transparency in the sector by creating a consumer right protection umbrella, has been passed in the Rajya Sabha. According to this bill, a real estate regulator will be established to monitor transactions and settle disputes between home buyers and builders. Builders will have to pay an interest to buyers for defaults or delays.
- In collaboration with New York-based National Resources Defence Council, the government is launching a programme to protect people from extreme heat in Bhubaneswar and Nagpur. Under the programme, weekly weather forecasts, extra water supplies, cool-air shelters, and afternoon breaks for workers, will be introduced. A heat wave killed at least 2,500 people across the country last year.
- Karnataka government has launched the Mukhyamantri Santwana Harish Yojana to provide Free medical treatment to road accident victims for the first 48 hours (2 days) in the nearest government or private hospital. The scheme has been named afterHarish Nanjappa who had donated his eyes moments before his death. He had died as no help has been provided to him after he has been severely injured in mishap in February 2016 .
- Government has announced that more than four lakh Jobs will be generated under Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) during 2016-17. Minister of Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises Mr Kalraj Mishra informed,that a sum of Rs 1,139 crore will be utilized during the next financial year under PMEGP to assist 55 thousand projects with Margin Money.
- The Maharashtra government has distributed ₹2,536 crore to drought-affected farmers.
- The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) is planning to install sound-level meters at wedding venues to keep a check on noise pollution.
- The Government launched ‘Mahila E-Haat’,a first of its kind online platform from the Women and Child Development Ministry to promote women entrepreneurs, particularly from rural areas. Women can sell their products on the platform directly without bearing any cost. The products can include clothing, organic products or toys.
- Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha has announced that India will see its first female fighter pilots batch on June 18. He said the three women trainees who volunteered for the fighter stream are currently in the second phase of training. Earlier, the Air Chief Marshal had expressed concern that women are “not physically suited for flying fighter planes”.
- Former NDDB (National Dairy Development Board) chief Dr Amrita Patel has been conferred prestigious 2016 Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is also known as the Krishi Shiromani Samman. The award has been bestowed upon her by Union Minister of Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh for her contribution in the field of agriculture and to increase productivity and rural prosperity.
- Five healthcare ATMs have come up in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as part the Union Health Ministry’s pilot programme. The ATMs will be manned by a health personnel with devices for basic tests using which consultation can be sought from a doctor remotely. The ATM will dispense only free medicines based on a prescription.
- A 108-feet tall idol of Rishabhdeva, the first Teerthankar of Jains, has entered the Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest Jain statue. The statue is located atop Mangi-Tungi mountain in Baglan tehsil of Maharashtra and is carved out of a single rock. Till now, the 57-feet idol of Lord Bahubali in Shravanabelagola has been considered the world’s tallest Jain statue.
- The sex ratio in Gujarat has come down to 919 in 2011 from 920 in 2001 as against significant increase of 10 points in the national average during this period, according to the Socio-Economic Review for 2015-16 tabled in the State Assembly recently. With 919 females for every 1000 males, Gujarat ranked 22nd among 28 states as per the 2011 Census.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has selected another village for adoption in his Varanasi Constituency of U.P. for development under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY). Nagepur, a village dominated by backward castes has been selected under the second phase of the Yojana. Earlier, Prime Minister had adopted Jayapur village in the same Varanasi constituency in the first phase in 2014.
- Renowned Dogri poetess and writer Padma Sachdev has been awarded Krutitava Smagra Samman for 2015 by the Kolkata’s Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad. Sachdev received this award for her outstanding contribution in literature and great service to Dogri Language.
- The Indian Railways is set to create an in-house research unit titled SRESHTA (Special Railway Establishment for Strategic Technology and Holistic Advancement) for improving the functioning of the entity. The wing will mostly have scientists and railway experts. SRESHTA is being formed as the existing research arm Research Design and Standards Organisation is preoccupied with day-to-day tasks.

- India and US has launched the Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship, in a new initiative to advance bilateral cooperation on climate change. This initiative will enable Indian research scholars to work with American institutions in the field. The fellowship, named after the late Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, is part of a commitment made by the US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build long-term capacity to address climate change-related issues in both the countries.
- Citizens of Bhutan planted 1,08,000 trees to welcome the birth of a son to King Khesar and Queen Pema. The trees, each sealed with a prayer, were planted a month after the couple announced the birth of their first child. Exactly 1,08,000 trees were planted as the number 108 is considered sacred in Buddhism.
- US state, California had passed ‘The End of Life Option Act‘. With the help of this act, Terminally ill residents of the state will legally be allowed to end their lives with medication prescribed by doctors starting June 9 this year. California became the fifth US state to allow physician-assisted suicide.
- Scientists from Japan have discovered a new species of bacteria, called Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6, that can eat plastic. This is the first known organism that can completely degrade PET.
- Singapore has been ranked the world’s most expensive city by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). It has held this title for the last three years. World’s 10 most expensive cities in which to live in 2016 – Singapore; Zurich, Switzerland; Hong Kong; Geneva, Switzerland; Paris; London; New York; Copenhagen, Denmark; Seoul, South Korea; Los Angeles.
- The Haj quota for India for this year has been fixed at 1,36,020 pilgrims, following an agreement signed with Saudi Arabia. Of the quota, 1,00,020 pilgrims will come through the Haj Committee of India and the rest through private tour operators. Due to the expansion of Mecca’s Grand Mosque, Saudi has reduced the quota for all countries by 20%.
- The Indian government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are organising a three-day conference on ‘Advancing Asia: Investing for the Future‘ at New Delhi from tomorrow.
- India has signed an agreement to extend $2 billion as line of credit to Bangladesh. This is the highest ever credit offered by India to any country. The credit would be used in implementing 14 different projects covering power, roads and health sectors, among others. Earlier, India had inked a $1 billion credit agreement with Bangladesh in 2010.
- Google’s DeepMind Artificial Intelligence (AI) ‘AlphaGo‘ won the five-game series 3-0 after defeating ‘Go’ World champion Lee Sedol in the third match of the series. The South Korean has won a total of 18 international titles, which is the second most in the game’s history.
- (2nd Thursday of March) is World Kidney Day. This day is a global health campaign celebrated every year all across the world in order to raise the public awareness about the kidneys importance and its contributions to the overall health. Theme of World Kidney Day 2016 : “Kidney Disease & Children: Act Early to Prevent It”.
- Tibetan Uprising Day observed (10th March). This day commemorates the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the presence of the People’s Republic of China in Tibet.
- India and the United States have agreed to work together in fighting terrorist organisations like the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Muhammad. This announcement by the White House came after Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar met US National Security Advisor Susan Rice in Washington DC. The US also announced that it looks forward to continuing a “good, strong relationship with India”.
- Guinness World Records has confirmed that the world’s oldest living man at the age of 112 years and 179 days as of is Israel Kristal from Israel. Born in 1903, Kristal has lived through both World Wars and survived the Nazi war camp in Auschwitz in the 1940s.
- NASA has announced that it has delayed the launch of its next Mars mission ‘InSight’ to May 5, 2018. The mission is aimed at studying and learning more about the Red Planet’s interior and the surface. The launch has been originally scheduled for this month but has been put on hold indefinitely after a leak has been discovered in a spacecraft instrument.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a 100 MW power supply to Bangladesh by remote control from Tripura’s Palatana plant on 23rd March 2016. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would provide 10 GB Internet bandwidth to India on the same day.
- The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) jointly launched the Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child Marriage. It is a multi-country initiative and is part of a global effort to prevent girls from marrying too young.
- Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards test-fired ballistic missiles from silos across the country , defying US sanctions on its missile programme. The test has been reportedly intended “to show Iran’s deterrent power and also the Islamic Republic’s ability to confront any threat against the (Islamic) Revolution”. Iran’s last test has been criticised as the missiles can carry nuclear warheads.
- (8th March) is International Women’s Day. This day is observed to recognise women for their achievements without regard to divisions. The first National Women’s Day has been observed by the American Socialist Partyon February 28, 1909. The 2016 theme for International Women’s Day : “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.
- Germany has announced that it will help India to develop 3 Indian cities as Smart Cities. They are, Kerala’s Kochi, Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore and Odisha’s Bhubaneswar. Germany had recently set up a six-member joint committee with Indian officials to identify cities from the smart cities list. Germany has already been supporting initiatives like Swachh Bharat and is currently India’s second largest bilateral donor.
- India-born US inventor Dr Shiva Ayyadurai has claimed that he invented the full email system in 1978 and not the recently deceased Ray Tomlinson. He argued that Tomlinson’s internal messaging experiment could only send text messages between computers, which is not email. He said Tomlinson’s employer “rewrote history as it serves to enhance their brand in the lucrative cyber-security market”.
- With a 12% representation against a global average of 22.4%, India stands at the103rd place out of 140 countries in the representation of women in its Parliament. According to data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, an international organisation of parliaments, the African nation of Rwanda leads the rankings with a 63.8% representation of women in its Parliament.
- After the ambitious Make in India Week, Mumbai will host another international summit, the BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave, on April 14. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the event. The three-day conclave of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, andSouth Africa) is being touted as another opportunity for the city to showcase itself as an emerging international finance centre.
- Delegations representing at least two cities from each BRICS country will visit Mumbai during April 14-16, and discuss aspects of urbanisation for Mumbai.

- India and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a Regional Training and Technical Assistance Centre in New Delhi with a view to enhancing capacity development and training officials in dealing with macro-economic and financial issues. The MOU has been signed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- India’s largest private sector lender ICICI Bank launched a credit-linked subsidy scheme for home loans under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana ( PMAY). Under this scheme, individuals including women borrowers from the economically weaker section and low income group will be able to acquire and construct the first brick-and-mortar house of the family by paying significantly lower equated monthly installments ( EMIs). ICICI Bank has signed an MoU with National Housing Bank ( NHB) to facilitate the credit-linked subsidy to eligible borrowers.
- The Cabinet has approved the signing of an MoU with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for it to set up the South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Center (SARTTAC) in India. The SARTTAC will be a collaborative venture among the IMF, and member countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka, and several development partners.
- Yahoo has announced an update that lets users sign up for its services without having to specially create a new Yahoo e-mail address. Users can now access Yahoo platforms through their existing e-mail addresses including Gmail and Outlook. The feature is currently operational for Yahoo Fantasy Sports and will soon roll out for Yahoo Finance, Yahoo News and Yahoo Messenger.
- Sudhakar Rao will take over as the new Public Interest Director and Chairmanof BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange). He is going to replace S Ramadorai, who has retired from the position on 7th March 2016 after serving BSE for six years.
- The European Central Bank cut its benchmark interest rate (refinancing rate) to 0% from 0.05%. The refinancing rate is the rate at which the ECB lends money to commercial financial institutions like banks. The bank also slashed its deposit rate by 0.1% to (-)0.40%. With the negative deposit rates, banks will be charged to deposit money with the Eurosystem.
- State-run telecom company BSNL has partnered with Tata Sky to offer video-on-demand services across India. Under this first-of-its-kind partnership between a public and a private entity, connectivity and bandwidth will be provided by BSNL and content will be provided by Tata Sky. Currently, Tata Sky has around 4,000 titles available on its platform.
- Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje presented a ₹99,693 crore annual budget for the state. Social and community services accounted for 38.22% of the budget allocations while the power sector constituted 31.64%. Further, two initiatives, one which incentivises the girl child’s education and the other which aims at training 1.5 lakh schoolgirls in self-defence, were introduced.
- Mozilla rolled out an update for its open-source web browser Firefox for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android platforms, featuring a new free cross-browser video chat app called ‘Firefox Hello’.
- Technology non-profit organisation Nasscom Foundation has received $4.78 million in donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to modernise public libraries with the help of technology. Nasscom Foundation has launched Indian Public Library Movement under which it will provide computers, training staff and supporting classes and programs at 300 district-level libraries across India.
- The government is going sell up to 5% of its stake in the Railways Ministry-controlled company Container Corporation of India (Concor) at a floor price of ₹1,195 per share. The government currently holds 61.79% stake in the company.
- Private lender Yes Bank yesterday launched an all-women operated bank branch ‘Yes Grace’ on Cunningham Road, Bengaluru aimed at offering customised banking solutions to women. The new branch, served by eight employees currently and with plans to raise the count to 12, will also drive for financial literacy, family banking, safety and wellness amongst women.
- Bajaj Power Generation Company has signed an agreement with Indian Railways for electrification of the Lalitpur-Udaipura rail section under the public private partnership (PPP). The Railways would complete the electrification work in a year’s time under its customer funding scheme, which would cost nearly Rs 47 crore.
- According to TRAI, India reached a total telecom subscriber base of 1036.41 million by the end of 2015. This constituted around 97.5% mobile subscribers and 2.4% wireline subscribers.
- Various banks have so far disbursed over ₹1.15 lakh crore under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY), according to Financial Services Secretary Anjuly Chib Duggal. Under the scheme, which has been launched in April 2015, loans between ₹50,000 and ₹10 lakh are provided to non-corporate small businesses. PMMY runs under government body Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Bank (MUDRA).
- Travel solutions provider Thomas Cook India has inked a pact with Western Union Business Solutions and DCB Bank to facilitate international trade payments by small- and medium-sized enterprises. Western Union Business Solutions is a business segment of the Western Union Company.
- Gujarat has topped the list of 21 states with the most investment potential,followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu, a report by government think-tank NCAER has revealed. The ranking has been based on five factors- labour, infrastructure, economic climate, governance and political stability. While Gujarat topped in governance and political stability, Delhi ranked one in infrastructure and economic climate.
- Indian Railways has formed a new Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to implement the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Bullet Train project. The project is estimated to cost about ₹97,636 crore, with 81% of the funding coming by way of loan from Japan. An SPV, typically a subsidiary of a larger corporation, is a legal entity created to fulfil specific or temporary objectives.
- Indian Railways’ premium trains Rajdhani and Shatabdi would soon be driven by two engines, instead of one. While one engine will haul the train from the front, the second engine will be attached to the rear, thereby giving the trains additional speed and reducing journey time significantly. The initiative is part of the Railways’ ‘Mission Raftaar’.
- ICICI Bank has launched iWork@home, an initiative that allows women employees to work from home for up to a year. This initiative allows women employees to have access to their required operating systems in a safe and secure manner, creating a seamless office-like environment.
- SoftBank Group appointed Nikesh Arora to lead the company’s overseas operations, after it announced splitting into two companies to separate its domestic and global operations. Arora is currently working as SoftBank’s President and Chief Operating Officer. Further, SoftBank appointed its current Director Ken Miyauchi to lead the company’s business in Japan.
- With 7% presence, India ranks 26th globally in terms of presence of women members on company boards. This study has been conducted by MyHiringClub and JobPortal. Norway leads the list with 40.12% followed by Sweden and Finland.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to share FDI-related data with the country’s intelligence agencies, Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), to check the black money entering India. The FDI to India comes either through the automatic route, or through government body Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) which processes FDI-proposals, both of which get recorded by RBI.
- The number of Public Sector banks (PSBs) may reportedly be brought down to sixfrom the current 27 by means of consolidation, to tackle the banks’ bad-loan scenario. This has been expressed by heads of PSBs and other financial institutions at a retreat organised by the government. Further, a committee will be set up to decide the right matches for consolidation.
- Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has laid the foundation stone of India’s first-of-its-kind Octomax unit at the Mathura refinery. The Octomax is an indigenously developed technology that will be used for producing Euro-IV, Euro-V equivalent gasoline. The refinery will be set up at an estimated cost of ₹43 crore and is expected to function from October 2017.
- Japan‘s multinational corporation SoftBank Group announced to split into two companies to separate its domestic and overseas business. The overseas unit would include SoftBank’s stakes in Sprint Corp and Alibaba Group and the domestic business would include its holdings in Yahoo Japan.

- Five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand defeated Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov in the opening round match to take the sole lead in the 2016 Candidates Tournament. The winner of this eight-player round-robin tournament will challenge World Champion Magnus Carlsen for the World title in New York in November. Anand is set to face Armenia’s Levon Aronian in the next round.
- The schedule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 (9 April 2016 – 29 May 2016) has been announced with the defending champions Mumbai Indians to play the opener against the Rising Pune Supergiants in Mumbai on April 9. The tournament will feature a total of 60 matches with the final to be played on May 29 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had asked the ICC for a change in venue because of security concerns over the original venue Dharamsala.
