Class work in three government educational institutes, including Degree College Handwara, will be suspended tomorrow in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara in view of clashes between students and security forces today.

An official spokesperson here today said that class work at Government Degree College Handwara, Government Boys Higher Secondary School Handwara and Government Girls Higher Secondary School Handwara shall remain closed tomorrow as a precautionary measure.

Security forces today resorted to aerial firing and burst teargas shells at many places in Kashmir to disperse students, who were protesting against use of alleged disproportionate force in educational institutes during the last over three weeks.

The recent protests by students were triggered by a security force raid on Degree College Pulwama on April 15, when over 50 students, including girls, were injured in the clashes in educational institute.

The sprung in student protests prompted authorities to suspend class work of various Higher Secondary Schools and colleges for over a week last month as a precautionary measure.
In view of upward spiral in the violence, the state government last month banned 22 social networking sites, including Facebook and WhatsApp, saying they are used to incite violence and spread rumours. However, the banned sites are still accessible on all mobile networks though Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and on state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) broadband service.
