The other backward classes (OBCs) will now get 10% quota in educational institutes, including technical and professional institutes, in Punjab.

OBCs, who comprise 20% of the state’s population as per a government survey report of 2009, are currently provided 12% reservation in government jobs and 5% in educational institutions.

Fulfilling its poll promise, the Congress government in Punjab on Wednesday announced that the quota comes into immediate effect as the welfare department has already issued a notification to this effect.

The government said the move is aimed at uplifting backward classes, which suffered “extreme suppression” under the SAD-BJP rule. The decision, a government spokesman claimed, will not impact the reservation for SCs/STs, which remains unchanged at 25%.

The Punjab government had in March 1964 notified reservation quota of 20% and 2% for members of SCs/STs and backward classes in education, technical and professional institutions. These norms were revised in 1974, when the state government enhanced the quota by 5%, taking it to 25% in case of members of scheduled castes, and to 5% in case of members of backward classes.
