Cape Town learners march for safety at schools

The march follows incidents of gang-related shootings and clashes on the Cape Flats in recent weeks. Thousands of learners from several schools in Cape Town have marched to Parliament demanding greater safety at schools.

Learners, members of Equal Education and teacher unions Sadtu and Neptosa took part in the protest.

The learners say violence at schools including gang violence in communities is hampering teaching and learning at schools.

Provincial Deputy Secretary, Sbongile Kwazi says: “If you go to areas like your Nyanga, Hanover Park and Lavender Hills, every day you see hear of incidents of violence around schools and these incidents happen when the learners are going to school and sometimes it also spills onto the school premises.
